FC Barcelona have confirmed that right-back Sergi Roberto has officially picked up an injury during his cameo against Levante in Barcelona’s 3-3 draw on Tuesday night. A disappointing night went from bad to worse for the defender as he had to be subbed back off due to discomfort in the game’s final minutes.
Roberto is suffering from discomfort in the tendon of his right rectus femoris. The thigh injury has been giving him plenty of trouble this season. He first started struggling back in November of 2020, following which he was out for well over two months.
He then returned to action but suffered a relapse of the issue in Barcelona’s 5-3 win over Granada in the Copa del Rey before being sidelined for close to a month once more. Against Levante, the same issue seems to still persist. Roberto came on at half-time to replace Ronald Araujo but had to be taken in the 84th minute.
Him and Barcelona, both had a night to forget as they squandered numerous opportunities and threw away leads en-route to dropping points against Levante. Roberto in particular, seemed very out of sorts, perhaps owing to the injury as well.
Many believe that the 29-year old’s time at the club is now over and that Barcelona should start looking for replacements right away. Even though there is buzz regarding a renewal, his persistent injuries and lack of form are gravely concerning.
Barcelona have not yet specified a time frame for his return, but state that he will be assessed in the coming days. Ronald Araujo, the player initially replaced by Roberto, also suffered a knock during the game. Hopefully, neither of the problems are too serious.
