Ronald Koeman has exhibited a lot of virtues in his short time as the manager of Barcelona. One which has been widely praised is his emphasis on the consistent use of youngsters. Be it the seamless integration of Pedri into the first team or the confidence shown in Oscar Mingueza and Ilaix Moriba, the youth has flourished under his tutelage.
According to the Spanish outlet, Mundo Deportivo, there are set to be more promotions under the Dutch manager. Nico Gonzalez, a 19-year-old newcomer to Barca B has been identified by Koeman as the player closest to the current first-team setup.
The Spanish midfielder who was recently promoted to Barca B following the long-term injury to a regular starter, Andres Solano, has been admired by Koeman for a long time. As per sources in Ciutat Esportiva, Koeman is well aware of Nico’s technical ability on the ball and the defensive solidity that he offers to the team.
The U-19 International is said to possess exquisite technique and his tall frame at 1.88m helps him maintain a strong physical presence in the middle of the park. Koeman has closely followed the development of Nico Gonzalez and is certain that a player of his qualities could be useful at the top level.
That being said, there is a contract situation that needs to be addressed before any future plan can be executed. Nico’s contract is set to expire in June 2021 and Barça’s idea is to renew immediately, but as of now, no contact has been established with his agents. His last renewal was three years ago, but unlike other players in the youth setup; there was no inclusion of the ‘+2 years’ clause.
Barcelona is aware of the delicacy of the situation and will urge to start negotiations as soon as possible. They will hope to extend the midfielder’s stay at the Camp Nou for at least 3 more years. With a promotion on the cards, an agreement should be reached sooner or later.
