In yet another major development concerning Barcelona and their transfer activities, COPE reports that the Catalans have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid over a swap deal involving Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez.

There had been mutterings of such an arrangement potentially happening over the past week, even as Barcelona looked to get Griezmann off their books while Atletico Madrid made a desperate push to offload Saul, following the acquisition of Rodrigo De Paul.

Griezmann, who has not had the most pleasant of times during his two-year tenure with Barcelona, was keen on securing a return to the Wanda Metropolitano as soon as it became clear that the Catalans wanted to cut him from the squad this summer. In fact, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner was said to be willing to take a pay cut to push through a deal.

As for Saul, the midfielder had seen his involvement reduce quite a bit over the past year under Diego Simeone, with the signing of De Paul further pushing him down the pecking order.

With Barcelona having been in the market for a new central midfielder after missing out on Georginio Wijnaldum and Atletico looking for a new forward, a swap deal made a lot of sense, at least on paper.

If the aforementioned report is to be believed, an agreement is now in place for the transfers to happen, unless there is a last-minute swerve from Barca president Joan Laporta.

Such a deal, if it goes through, will see Barcelona save about €12 million in gross salaries per season with Griezmann’s exit and the arrival of Saul, who is valued at €60-€70 million.

Griezmann is currently on holiday in Ibiza, with Atletico Madrid captain, Koke, and is waiting on a call from the Rojiblancos to sign the deal. So, as it stands, things seem to be in place for the Frenchman to reunite with Simeone while Saul looks embarks on a new journey at Camp Nou.
