Report: Sergi Roberto facing injury relapse

As per reports by Javi Miguel of AS, Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto could be facing more time out on the sidelines after picking up another injury against Granada in the Copa del Rey. The versatile right-back had only returned from his previous injury at the weekend against Athletic Bilbao, but is now facing a potential relapse. The Spaniard could be facing another month’s injury layoff.

The 28-year-old was taken off after he felt discomfort in his right thigh when he cleared a Granada cross. FC Barcelona later confirmed that Roberto has an issue with the quadriceps of his right thigh. There will be further tests to evaluate the exact extent of the injury. Roberto returned to action for the first time since November, where he suffered an injury to the femoral rectus of his right thigh.

Sergi Roberto picked up his earlier injury at the same time as center-back Gerard Pique in their match against Atletico Madrid. Roberto got his first minutes since then in Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Athletic Club Bilbao in La Liga. He came in to replace Miralem Pjanic and played for 23 minutes. In the thrilling Copa del Rey quarter-final against Granada, he started the game but had to be replaced by Sergino Dest in the 57th minute

This comes as bad news for Ronald Koeman as the crucial Champions League tie against PSG is just 13 days away. He now has very scarce options at right-back. Sergino Dest returned against Granada after his injury in the Supercup final. He was also nursing an injury to his right thigh and has finally received medical clearance. Another option for Koeman would be to play Oscar Mingueza in his makeshift right-back role again, as he had done in Roberto and Dest’s absence over the past few matches.
