A recent exclusive report by L’Equipe relayed by Cuatro, states that Manchester City have now discarded all of their interest in signing Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. This means that only one club— Paris Saint Germain, remain attentive to Messi’s situation at Barcelona.
PSG’s interest in Messi is no longer a secret, as they continue to push vigorously to convince the Argentine to switch Camp Nou for the Parc des Princes. Reports have also stated that the French giants have already offered him a contract.
L’Equipe now state that Manchester City have now turned their attentions elsewhere. Despite being the frontrunners for Messi’s signature at the end of last season following his burofax saga with Barcelona, they are now reportedly looking to sign Kylian Mbappe from PSG.
The news does not come as much of a shock, as despite PSG’s vehement efforts to sign Messi have been apparent, both publicly and behind the scenes. Whereas the impetus from Manchester seems to have dissolved over the past months, as they seem to believe the 33-year old will not leave Barcelona.
There is plenty of speculation to confirm City’s suspicions, with rumours of Lionel Messi’s contract extension with the Catalans also floating around constantly. The Argentine himself, has stated outright that he wants to focus on the current season before thinking about any of these matters.
The report highlights that the Manchester City owners will reward Pep Guardiola with a massive signing if he were to win this season’s Champions League. The English giants already have a foot in the final as they hold the advantage over PSG from the first leg of the semis.
If City splurge the cash on Mbappe, it will allow the Parisiens to pour their funds into making one final push for Messi’s signature. A highly interesting transfer saga may be about to unfold.
