With Mateu Alemany set to leave on June 30, former midfielder Deco has emerged as the most likely candidate to fulfil the role of Barcelona’s director of football, reports Roger Saperas via RAC1.

The news of Alemany’s departure from Barcelona came to light last evening when the team confirmed in a statement that he will leave the club on July 1 despite having a contract until 2024.

“Mateu Alemany has transferred to the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, with the intention to start a new path, but guaranteeing that he will complete the entire summer market with the entity,” read the statement from Barcelona.

Interestingly enough, Alemany departure could be followed by another high-profile exit from the management, with Jordi Cruyff also said to be having doubts about continuing at the club beyond June 30, which is when his contract ends.

With a key position now set to become vacant, Deco seems to be leading the race. The former Portugal international, who has previously worked with Jorge Mendes, now has his own agency and currently acts as Raphinha’s representative and is also responsible for Barça’s Portuguese and Brazilian markets.

For what it is worth, Deco has an excellent relationship with Xavi and he was very decisive in the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last January and Raphinha in the summer.

As for Alemany, it is being reported that the 60-year-old was upset with Barcelona over several issues. This includes Lapota’s view of seeking advice from agents such as Pini Zahavi and Jorge Mendes.

The lack of secrecy from an executive level was another reason why he started having doubts about his continuity. Moreover, he also differed with the club’s views on Lionel Messi’s return and the contract renewals of veterans like Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto.

As a result, Alemany is now likely to join Aston Villa and Deco might take up the role at Barça.
