Official: Mateu Alemany will leave Barcelona on June 30

In a shocking development, FC Barcelona have confirmed in an official statement that club director Mateu Alemany will be stepping away from his duties on June 30.
Alemany was brought in after Joan Laporta won the presidential elections in 2021. During his time at the club, the 60-year-old worked wonders in the transfer market, especially last summer, when he helped the club close deals that looked impossible.
Alemany’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2024. However, he has decided to leave the club on June 30 to pursue a new challenge in his career, and president Laporta has accepted his resignation.
Even though Alemany will no longer be a club employee from July 1, he has agreed to help Barcelona see out the summer transfer window, which was a key condition in Laporta accepting his resignation.
The official statement from the club reads: “Despite having a contract until 2024, Mateu Alemany has informed the FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta , of his intention to take a new path in his career but at the same time assuring that he will complete the summer transfer market with the Club.
“Therefore, despite formally leaving the Club on 1 July, thanks to an informal agreement, Mateu Alemany has committed himself to completing the first team’s transfer business this summer, even if it should be at the final moments of the transfer window.”
Barcelona have also confirmed in their statement that they will shortly make announcements regarding the structural changes that will happen in the club following Alemany’s decision to part ways.
It is being suggested by media outlets that the 60-year-old could be headed for Premier League club Aston Villa.
Antonio Cordon, formerly of Real Betis, could be the best-placed option to succeed Alemany as the director at Barcelona, reports Toni Juanmarti.
Meanwhile, it has previously been reported that Jordi Cruyff’s contract with Barcelona expires soon. So, there is some doubt over his continuity as well, at this point.
