Fabrizio: Barcelona summer target set to sign contract renewal with club
In what will come as a bitter blow for Barcelona, midfield transfer target Marcelo Brozovic is set to sign a new contract with Inter Milan, claims Fabrizio Romano.
The 29-year-old was in the final four months of his current contract with the Serie A champions, which had sparked a lot of speculations over his future beyond the ongoing campaign.
Barcelona had emerged as one of the Croatian international’s suitors as the club sought a long-term replacement for captain Sergio Busquets. Reports had even indicated that the Catalan giants had already made a contract offer to Brozovic to lure him to Camp Nou next season.
The Blaugrana were not the only club in pursuit of the former Dinamo Zagreb ace as Premier League giants Liverpool had also registered an interest in his services.
However, as per the latest update from the ever-reliable Romano, Brozovic will sign a new deal with Inter Milan imminently. The Italian transfer expert claims that a verbal agreement between the club and the player had been reached weeks ago.
It is further stated that Brozovic always wanted to continue with the Nerazzurri, meaning interested parties such as Barcelona and Liverpool never really stood a chance of signing him. And, an official statement regarding the contract extension is expected to be made in a matter of hours.
Barça have plenty of quality in their midfield department, but with Busquets entering the final phase of his career, a replacement for him will need to be brought in. Brozovic, given his qualities and experience, would have been the ideal fit, but that ship seems to have sailed now.
It now remains to be seen if the Blaugrana go after some other target as a replacement for Busquets or decide to groom Nico Gonzalez for the role in the long term.
