Italian news outlet la Repubblica has reported that Barcelona have offered Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic a lucrative five-year deal worth €8 million per season as the Catalan club look keen on prying the Croatian away from Serie A.

Brozovic’s current Inter contract runs until the end of the season, and although the Nerazzurri are working on a potential extension, the parties involved are yet to reach a middle ground in terms of salary.

As quoted by the report, the Italian side has put forward a proposal of a four-year deal worth €6 million a season. The deal has been on the table since December 2021, but the Croatian is yet to put pen to paper.

Inter’s intention regarding the 29-year-old is pretty straightforward. The team wants to build the future around Brozovic, and while they expected the midfielder to finalize everything by mid-January, Barcelona’s sudden interest has disrupted the order altogether.

For Barça, Brozovic is the perfect short-term replacement for the ageing Sergio Busquets. The Croatian knows how to anchor a midfield with ease, and on a free transfer, is too good a market opportunity to pass up.

Inter know the value Brozovic holds, and the new deal was supposed to ward off interest from the Premier League sides such as Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, but Barcelona are said to be pushing for a deal by offering a more lucrative deal.

Whether or not Brozovic will agree to the improved offer remains to be seen, but everything that has just panned has put the Inter management, including Beppe Marotta and manager Simone Inzaghi on high alert.

They expect the 29-year-old to sign a contract within the next ten days, but as things stand, the midfielder is said to have considering his options as an offer from Barcelona is too hard to refuse.

“The desire from both sides is to continue on together, this is the official confirmation. We’re working to find a solution. We hope we can close quickly, it’s what everyone wants,” Marotta told Italian broadcaster DAZN ahead of the Milan Derby on February 5.

The situation, as of today, is still deadlocked, but Brozovic’s name will continue to be linked with Barcelona until the day he signs a new contract with Inter.
