Liverpool join the race to sign Barcelona’s midfield target

Despite claims that Marcelo Brozovic will sign a new contract with Inter Milan, there have been no fresh developments on the matter. And with each passing day, the Croatian international gets closer to becoming a free agent in the summer.
His situation has alerted a host of top clubs across Europe, with Barcelona, too, among the teams interested in the 29-year-old.
One of the best defensive midfielders on the continent, Brozovic has been key to Inter Milan’s recent success and was a pivotal member of the team that lifted the Scudetto last season.
Given his experience and proven pedigree, he could be seen as a replacement for Barça skipper Sergio Busquets at Camp Nou. But, the Catalans will face some serious competition in pursuit of the midfielder.
According to a fresh report from Fichajes, Premier League bigwigs Liverpool, too, have entered the fray to sign Brozovic. The Reds are on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park and have set their sights on the Inter Milan mainstay.
Liverpool are discretely rebuilding their squad with an eye on the future. The rise in prominence of Diogo Jota, the signings of Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz are indicators that Jurgen Klopp is putting plans in place to move on from the old guard when the time comes.
The same policy will need to be applied in midfield, where James Milner, 37, is entering the final phase of his career, while captain Jordan Henderson will turn 32 in a few months and has had injury problems of late.
Someone like Brozovic, given his volumes of experience at the highest level, would thus be a quality addition for the Merseyside giants, although it is said that there are some concerns in the Reds’ camp due to his age.
Nonetheless, with Liverpool also in the fray to sign the Croatian, Barcelona will have their task cut out to land him. At the same time, there is also a strong possibility that he decides to sign an extension with Inter Milan as well. So, only time will tell how this story develops in the coming weeks.
