In a huge piece of news, Javi Miguel of AS is reporting that Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets had a meeting with manager Xavi Hernandez at Marbella recently, where the former’s future was discussed.
As per the report, Busquets informed Xavi about his next move as his contract at Barcelona closes in on expiry. And all signs indicate that the 34-year-old midfielder could be on his way out of Camp Nou at the end of the season.
Busquets has been a top player for Barcelona for a decade and a half, etching his name in the history of the club in gold. The midfielder’s current contract expires on June 30 and the club have been working hard to convince him to stay for another year.
Xavi has been intent on keeping hold of his captain for at least another season, with Barcelona tabling a one-year contract offer worth €7 million per year, with an option of an additional twelve months.
However, Busquets has a much more lucrative contract offer from Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal and recent reports had suggested that the former Spanish international might be leaning towards an exit.
Given that the team was on a holiday, Xavi and Busquets are understood to have made use of it by travelling to Marbella. During their time there, the pair discussed the latter’s future and the manager has been made aware of his decision.
An announcement could be made once the La Liga title is sealed, although it can be moved forward in case the rumours of his future began to dominate the headlines.
