Barcelona captain’s new salary would drop to €7 million per year if he renews

Sergio Busquets’ future has been one of the talking points at Barcelona this season, with his current contract at Camp Nou expiring at the end of the season.
Barça’s coaching staff has appeared very keen on keeping hold of the services of Busquets, who has continued to be a valuable player for the team even at the age of 34.
Barcelona have already tabled a renewal offer to Busquets – a contract until 2024 with an option to extend for a further year. But the player has yet to make a decision on his future, amid interest from Major League Soccer giants Inter Miami.
According to a report from MARCA, Busquets’ renewal offer is worth €7 million gross, which is three times lesser than what he currently earns. MARCA’s report has been confirmed by Gerard Romero as well, with the player likely to bag around €3.5 million net in the new contract.
This is a substantial salary cut for a player who is regarded as one of the best midfielders to ever play for the club. With over 600 competitive appearances, Busquets is also one of the longest-serving players for the Blaugrana.
One would imagine the large salary cut is playing a key role in delaying Busquets’ decision, with the midfielder reportedly open to a move to MLS.
However, recent reports linking Lionel Messi to a potential return to Barcelona could play in the club’s favour. The midfielder shares an excellent relationship with the Argentine and could be looking forward to playing with him once again next season.
If reports are to be believed, we can expect a definitive decision on Busquets’ future to be made by the end of the week, perhaps just after the Getafe match.
