Herbert Heiner, president of Bayern Munich, has come forward to deny any rumours linking them with Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

When he arrived at Barcelona in the summer of 2020, Frenkie de Jong was thought of as the future of the club’s midfield. His technical understanding and positional awareness were expected to make his transition to the Catalan side easier.

However, the tables have now turned. Since the departure of Ronald Koeman late last year, the Dutch protege has struggled to impress in the garnet and blue. His performances have taken such a tumble that he has been surpassed by both Nico and Gavi in the pecking order.

Amidst his uncertain future, rumours of his departure have come to the fore. One of the clubs heavily linked with de Jong’s signing are Bayern Munich, with rumours claiming that the Bavarians are ready to table an offer for de Jong in the winter.

The President of the Bundesliga champions, Herbert Heiner, has commented on these rumours and denied the existence of any interest. As relayed by Fabrizio Romano, he said,

“We have a very, very strong team – and I don’t see any reason why we should still do something in winter.”

Despite his underwhelming performances off late, the Dutch international still has the support of Xavi Hernandez. Ahead of Barcelona’s clash against Alaves, the manager spoke of de Jong’s situation, saying,

“Frenkie (de Jong) needs to be an important player for the team. And he will be, for sure.”

There are opposing views regarding his future in Barcelona. While some feel his dip in form is only temporary, others see his high market value as an opportunity to capitalize on.

The 24-year-old is expected to start on the bench against Deportivo Alaves at Mendizorroza tonight. He will likely receive minutes in the second half, which he will need to capitalise on to reverse his situation.
