As Barcelona continue to search for ways to trim down their wage bill in order to fit in Lionel Messi’s new contract, they may have been offered a helping hand by German champions, Bayern Munich. According to RAC1’s Gerard Romero, the Bavarians have enquired Barca about the possibility of signing one of their right-backs on loan for the upcoming campaign.

Barcelona, heading into the new season, have three right-sided full-backs at their disposal. Emerson Royal arrived earlier this summer from Real Betis in a deal worth €9 million, joining Sergino Dest, who had joined the Catalans only last summer.

Apart from the two aforementioned players, academy graduate Sergi Roberto, who has been converted into a right-back in recent years, is another option.

Given the abundance of options at Ronald Koeman’s disposal, Bayern Munich are hoping for a favour from the Catalans, by asking them for one of their right-backs on loan. The record German champions have Benjamin Pavard and Bouna Sarr as options for the right side of their defence, although the latter looked out of place in his debut season last time out.

Among the three right-backs at Barcelona’s disposal, Roberto seems the most expendable option, as things stand. Emerson impressed a fair bit during his time at Real Betis, while Dest – a player who was linked with Bayern last year, has age and potential on his side, despite not having a straightforward debut campaign with the Catalans.

Roberto, on the other hand, is in the final year of his contract with the Blaugrana. There have been reports of the club wanting to hand him a new contract with Koeman potentially using him as cover in the midfield department as well.

It now remains to be seen whether Barcelona entertain Bayern Munich’s request and allow either of Emerson, Dest, or Roberto to make the switch to the Allianz Arena on loan for the upcoming campaign.
