Barcelona’s midfield has sprung to life over the past year. The department that looked dusted after the departures of Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic has suddenly seen the rise of some promising talents.

La Masia came the the rescue when Barcelona needed it most once again. In Nico and Gavi, the Catalans have found some fresh and skilled legs to man the middle of the park again. Add to that mix Pedri and Frenkie de Jong and there seems to be a midfield set for a decade.

Yet, this news has not been as joyous for some other academy graduates. Sergi Roberto, who finally seemed set to move to midfield after years as a makeshift fullback, is now on the verge of not having a role in the team.

Roberto’s contract ends in the summer of 2022, and he has been continually hit with injuries over the last year. Talks for a renewal have been going on for a while, but broke down because of a discrepancy over the salary demands.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the player’s environment are pessimistic over a renewal. They consider that the situation should have been resolved a long time ago.

Yet, the reason for the delay is understandable. While the other three captains of the club readily agreed to salary reductions, Roberto did not accept the terms put forth by the club.

Moreover, yesterday, it was announced that the La Masia graduate would undergo surgery. The medical procedure will see him out of action for close to four months. It would, probably, be a poor idea to hand an extension to an injury prone player, who is rather easily replaceable.

Ousmane Dembele is another player facing a confusing future at Barcelona. His contract, too, is set to expire in June. And while he’s rejected the club’s first renewal proposal, a lot could change in the coming months.
