According to journalist Damian Villagra, although Lionel Messi’s mind is on winning the world cup with Argentina this year, negotiations regarding a possible return to Barcelona in 2023 have already begun.

Messi, 35, left Barcelona in the summer of 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain. After a rather difficult start, the Catalan legend is now enjoying his life with the capital club, scoring seven goals and eight assists across all competitions.

Ever since his exit, Barcelona have explored the possibility of a potential comeback but everything is just floating in the air at the moment.

Recently, although Xavi admitted that the veteran is still loved at the club, he somehow managed to skip the question rather cleverly.

“Leo? Let’s see how it goes, but this is not the time to talk about Leo,” the manager was quoted. “We love him very much but we are not doing him a favour if we talk about it. We have to let him enjoy Paris now,” he added.

It must be noted that Messi’s ongoing deal with PSG runs until 2023, meaning that there are chances that he might return to Barcelona on a free transfer.

At the same time, however, it is essential to remember that while club president Joan Laporta has also flirted with the idea, his relationship with the former club captain has strained after the Argentine was forced to leave in 2021.

Adding to it, one cannot overlook the fact that he is also attracting interest from USA’s Major League Soccer.

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, Barcelona have gone down to an extent they believe there will be no issue with regard to his salary if they do approach him next summer. Interestingly enough, it was one of the reasons why Messi left Barcelona in the first place.
