Since the season started, Barcelona have done several experiments with their frontline, and more specifically with the centre-forward position. Memphis Depay, Ferran Jutgla, Luuk de Jong, Ilias Akhomach, Nico Gonzalez, Martin Braithwaite, and Ansu Fati have all been deployed as the no. 9, each with problems of their own.
Xavi understands the limitations the squad has in that department and has been on the hunt for a striker in the winter, preferably on loan. Fans assumed that the Alvaro Morata deal was wrapped up, but it looks pretty much impossible now.
Yesterday, it was reported that Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the ‘Plan B’, and today The Athletic have reported that Barcelona, along with Juventus, have made bids to sign Aubameyang on loan in January.
Aubameyang, once captain of Arsenal, is an expendable figure for Mikel Arteta now. He was stripped off captaincy in December and was made to train alone.
The cherry on this sour cake came when the 32-year-old was sent home from the Gabon AFCON team camp.
Arsenal are now looking for a way out of this Aubameyang mess and might have to choose between Barcelona and Juventus.
It is intriguing, though, that the Bianconeri are in pursuit of the striker despite having Morata, Moise Kean, Paolo Dybala, and the freshly signed Dusan Vlahovic in their ranks.
Apparently, the decision of Morata will end up being the deciding factor here. If the Spaniard decides to stay in Turin, Barça will be in pole position to sign Aubameyang. However, if he is granted the move to the Catalan capital, Juventus will chase the Gabonese international.
With a little over 72 hours on the clock, Barcelona have to be on the lookout for any alternatives that open up.
