After weeks of debate and speculations, Barcelona decided to sack Ronald Koeman on Wednesday night, following yet another defeat, this time against Rayo Vallecano.

The 58-year-old had been under immense pressure since the start of the campaign due to poor performances and results. Fans had been calling for his head for quite some time now.

There had been moments when it seemed like the Barca hierarchy would axe the Dutchman, but club president Joan Laporta decided to stick him, partly due to the financial problems as Koeman would be owed a hefty compensation.

However, the loss at Estadio de Vallecas proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back, with Koeman finally getting sacked. Now, journalist Lluis Canut, a close friend and aide of the former Netherlands manager, has opened up on the situation leading to the sacking.

Canut, according to ActualiteBarca, has claimed that Koeman was fed up at the club after the defeat against Real Madrid and could not wait to get out. Following the Clasico loss at Camp Nou, Koeman’s car was mobbed by a set of supporters while he was on his way out of the stadium.

“Laporta told Koeman: we are not continuing. Ronald felt mistreated by the media and by management. He never felt he was confirmed as a coach. After El Clasico, he was fed up. He just couldn’t wait for it to be over,” Canut said.

Canut also spoke to TV3, where he claimed that his friend felt mistreated by Barcelona while adding that Koeman would not be willing to agree to reduce the compensation that he is owed by the club.

“Koeman feels mistreated, obviously. The club has asked him to reduce the compensation, which I don’t think he’ll accept,” Canut said.

With Koeman not in charge anymore, Barcelona have acted swiftly to secure a replacement. A deal for former midfielder Xavi to become the next manager is all but done. In the meantime, Sergi Barjuan has been handed the reins of the first team on an interim basis.
