Leo Messi will equal one of Xavi’s most impressive records in tonight’s game against Huesca, at the Camp Nou (9 PM CET). The Argentinian will play his 767th game for Barcelona, equalizing the only other Barça player to ever reach that milestone, Xavi Hernández.

Once it was clear that Messi was going to equalize his record, the former midfielder stated that “It had to be him. It is fair for the best player in history to have defended the Barça shirt the most times. It is an honour that the best in history surpasses and breaks my record.”, told Mundo Deportivo.

The Terrassa native, who is praised to be one of the best players to ever play for the Catalan club, played his last official game as a Blaugrana in the Champions League Final in Berlin, back in June 2015. His farewell was one to remember, as he retired from the club of his life right after winning a treble.

Besides being teammates, Xavi and Messi have shared many unique experiences and both have good memories from the time they were together sharing the same locker room. The midfielder saw Messi’s development, firsthand witnessing the growth of such an unbelievable player, for some considered the best to ever play this game.

Although Xavi’s record looked unbeatable six years ago, he knows that not only will he be surpassed by Messi but also has the possibility of falling to the fifth position of that list, as Busquets (616 games) and Piqué (558 games) are dangerously approaching the Blaugrana legend. Right after Xavi (767 games) and Messi (766 games), we find another legend of the Catalan club, Andrés Iniesta (674), who was surpassed by the Argentinian in March 2019.

It is yet to be seen what the final number for games played as a Blaugrana is for Leo Messi. He will surely be in the first position, but it is yet to be determined the exact appearances, as his future at the Camp Nou remains uncertain. The Argentinian will reportedly decide his future after this season is over, once he has spoken with the new president Joan.
