The deadline day saw a flurry of activity at FC Barcelona with the arrivals of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix grabbing the headlines.
At the same time, though, the Catalans also parted ways with some young talents from within the club as Ansu Fati and Ez Abde departed, although the former left only on loan while the Blaugrana have a buyback option for the latter.
Another notable exit that took place from Barça on the summer transfer deadline day was that of Eric Garcia, who sealed a loan move away to Girona.
Xavi wanted to keep Garcia for two reasons
By now, it has been well-established that Xavi and Barcelona did not want Garcia to leave the club on deadline day.
The manager himself has confirmed that the player asked to leave while Girona’s sporting director Quique Carcel also admitted that Barça were very reluctant to let go of the 22-year-old former Manchester City ace.
Now, Javi Miguel has shed light on why Xavi was so desperate to keep hold of Garcia and why the manager eventually agreed to let go of the Spaniard on loan.
The Barcelona head coach was eager to retain Garcia in the squad for two important reasons.
Firstly, Xavi valued the defender’s versatility as he can fill in as the centre-back and do a job as a full-back if required while last season he also displayed his ability and adaptability to the role of the defensive midfielder.
On top of that, another reason why Xavi wanted to keep hold of Garcia was that he did not wish to weaken his defensive unit further.
The thought makes sense considering that Ronald Araujo is already injured, Inigo Martinez has hardly played and Andreas Christensen had also been dealing with muscle discomfort.
Abde’s role in Garcia’s exit
Xavi even spoke to Garcia a day before the market deadline and believed that he had convinced the defender to continue.
But Ez Abde’s insistence on signing for Real Betis and refusal to join a Premier League club who were offering €20 million, meant that Barça would not have the desired FFP margin to register some players.
As such, Xavi agreed to let Garcia leave on loan to Girona for the rest of the 2023/24 season.
