With the season done and dusted, Barcelona were expected to close out the renewals of a few of the star players in the team, who were staring at an uncertain future at the club.

Ousmane Dembele had topped the list, while the renewal of Gavi and Sergi Roberto are also on the agenda. However, it appears Barça are facing a few late-season roadblocks in their quest to renew the contracts of the aforementioned star players.

Hopes of keeping Dembele at the club are already dissipating, while the Gavi situation is starting to take a negative trend, with the player reportedly unhappy with the president’s recent comments.

It has created a layer of uncertainty in the Barcelona camp surrounding their quest to keep Gavi at the club.

Speaking to the media after Barcelona’s friendly against A-League All Stars, Xavi offered thoughts on the situations revolving around the future of two of his star midfielders.

When Barça Universal asked about the future of Gavi, the Barcelona coach sounded rather optimistic, stating: “Gavi deal? I’m not worried, these things take time. I am hopeful that in a few days we can announce something”.

Barça Universal went on to ask about the future of Frenkie de Jong, another player who has been subjected to a move away from Camp Nou in the upcoming summer transfer window.

“Frenkie de Jong’s a key player for us. But everything does depend on our economic situation. We will see what happens,” Xavi added.

The Barcelona coach mentioning the club’s economic situation is quite interesting and in a way, confirms reports that have been suggesting the midfielder’s sale could be critical in helping Barça cut back on their losses.

With Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United reportedly interested, it will be interesting to see how Barcelona approach this saga, especially with Xavi now appearing more defensive regarding his stance on Frenkie’s stay at the club.
