While club football takes a break, the burden of entertainment falls on the international break. While Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup 2022 has been the major highlight of the past week, the under-19 European Championship qualifiers have been taking place as well.
Spain met Denmark in the Elite Round of the qualifiers, playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw. There were two players in the Spanish lineup that Barcelona fans might recognise.
One of them was Ilias Akhomach — Barcelona B winger —, starting on the right-wing, and the other was Pablo Torre — the 18-year-old Racing Santander prodigy that will join Barça next season.
Torre had quite the game, but the highlight of his outing came just before half-time as he whipped in a sensational free-kick into the box. Atletico Madrid U18 centre-back David Navarro managed to head the setpiece, making the score 1-1.

Spain went on to score two more by the 50th minute, cementing a 1-3 lead, but were pegged to a draw courtesy of Christian Rasmussen’s 79th-minute penalty.
Unfortunately, this means that Spain have played out both their Elite Round games in ties, and will not be able to qualify for the U-19 Euros that will take place in Slovakia in July 2022.
