FC Barcelona officially announced the contract renewal of Samuel Umtiti on their social media handles today. The extension of the French centre-back gave the club enough breathing space to register Ferran Torres for the remainder of the season.

However, Gerard Romero has revealed some shocking details of the defender’s renewal that come across as encouraging details for the club.

According to the Spanish journalist, Umtiti has reduced his annual wages by 10% in the new contract. This goes a long way, especially because he was amongst the top earners on the side.

The second clause revealed was that Barcelona can terminate the player’s contract in 2023 according to the new agreement. This comes as a significant relief as the Frenchman has hardly had a contributing role in the team over the past two years.

The final and most important part of the extension is the redistribution of salary. In his new deal, Umtiti will not receive any additional wage in his added two years. Instead, the salary he was supposed to get over the next 18 months will be spread over 54 weeks.

The World Cup winner is seen as one of the priority departures by those in the Barcelona management. However, his enormous wages have been a constant hurdle in securing a transfer, even on loan.

With the redistribution in salary, his pay slip becomes more affordable for interested clubs. That said, it will be easier for Barcelona to orchestrate a move on loan for Umtiti. The player is interested in moving away in the winter transfer window, and this renewal opens up a world of possibility.
