“The top five European clubs have called us”: Barcelona midfielder’s father makes huge claim about his son
Recent speculation about Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona has been fraught with talk of departures to other major clubs across Europe.
The Dutch midfielder was signed with the hopes that he would be the next big thing for Barcelona. He was supposed to be the player that for all intents and purposes, reinstates the club’s midfield within the footballing elite with his presence.
While Frenkie de Jong has not had a bad stint at Barcelona by any means, lately there have been doubts about whether or not the former Ajax man is living up to his full potential. This has led to a whirlwind of transfer talk that states he may end up leaving the club next summer.
With big clubs like Manchester United, Bayern Munich linked to the Dutchman, the midfielder’s father has now come out with a major statement in an interview with Dutch outlet AD, that will only fuel the flames.
“Bayern Munich or Manchester United? The weather is horrible there. I know Barcelona needs money and a big offer for Frenkie could help, but I don’t see it happening. Though the 5 top European clubs have all called,” said John de Jong.
The claim is indeed a major one and worrying for Barcelona if they intend to keep hold of Frenkie despite their financial situation. It will be tough to weigh up whether it is worth cashing in or hanging on to a player of de Jong’s calibre.
While the 24-year-old has not shone as bright as he can, he does warrant more patience. He has always said his desire was to end up playing for Barcelona but to keep doing so he must show what he is fully capable of.
The question is, how long can Barcelona keep waiting?
