Ahead of the return leg of Barcelona’s Champions League round of 16 tie against PSG, the rumour mill has started churning again. Neymar, according to L’Equipe, has once again contacted Lionel Messi to convince him to join Paris Saint Germain.
The Brazilian has expressly stated his desire a few times before to play alongside his former teammate and friend Messi, who shared a wonderful four seasons with him at Barcelona. PSG as a whole have been very vocal about their pursuit of Messi. Director Leonardo and other players like Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes have also tried to woo Messi earlier on.
Messi’s contract with Barcelona runs out this summer on the 30th of June. Manchester City and PSG have been the prime contenders to sign him since he announced his desire to leave at the end of last season. However, now with Joan Laporta having taken over as new club president, things are not so straightforward.
Messi had stated that he will wait until the end of the season to address his future. The outcome of the presidential elections, where he voted for the first time would certainly play a big part. Laporta’s pre-existing relationship with the Argentine is great and he might be the most favourable candidate.
Messi personally congratulated Laporta on his victory, which seems like a cause for optimism among the Barcelona fans. Neymar however, might be trying to nudge his friend once again before the return leg, which he will unfortunately miss due to injury.
It is tough to pinpoint just how effective these moves are in a transfer saga like this. However, there is now a strong chance that Neymar’s dream of sharing the same club with Messi again, remains unfulfilled.
