Over the past few days, Barcelona and Manchester City have been linked with a myriad of transfer exchanges between the two clubs.

There have been reports of the Premier League champions making seven players available for Barcelona in their bid to sign Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto, while the Catalans have been credited with interest in Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva.

While all those claims may or may not be true, the speculations surrounding Silva do carry some weight, according to a report from The Athletic’s Sam Lee.

It is claimed that the Portuguese international came very close to joining the Blaugrana last summer but a move failed to materialise at the last moment. Silva was said to have felt gutted that the transfer did not happen after he had gone through a challenging 2019/20 season with the Mancunian outfit.

And, even though the 26-year-old fared much better last time out, he remains open to an exit from the Etihad Stadium and still ‘likes the idea’ of playing for Barcelona ahead of the 2021/22 season.

A £43 million signing from AS Monaco in 2017, Silva hasn’t always been a regular starter at Manchester City, which is understandable given the plethora of options available at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

However, whenever called upon, the 26-year-old has delivered more often than not, especially in the 2020/21 term, which is why the Manchester City manager is keen on holding on to him at the club. Guardiola is said to have been left impressed by Silva’s dedication and application, despite him desiring to leave the club.

But with Silva looking for an exit this summer as well, a transfer may well come to fruition if the right offer comes along, as it would allow the Cityzens to strengthen in other areas. The 55-time capped Portuguese international still has four years left on his contract with the English champions.

Having come ever so close to joining for Barcelona last year, they may be some hope that the midfielder gets his desired switch this time out.
