As per a report from MARCA, Barcelona are unlikely to venture into the transfer market for the signing of a new left-back in the current transfer window.

The left-back position at Camp Nou has been a topic of much discussion this summer, and rightly so. Jordi Alba enjoyed a fine 2020/21 campaign, but at 32 needs his game-time managed carefully. However, Barcelona are set to lose their only other senior left-back in the squad – Junior Firpo – who is closing in on a switch to Premier League outfit Leeds United.

Furthermore, Alba’s own future has been a subject of speculation with Serie A champions Inter Milan making enquiries for the Spanish international. However, despite the situation being as it is, Barcelona are now unlikely to make a move to strengthen the position in the transfer window, the report claims.

The current financial situation at Barcelona is said to be one of the main reasons for the club not to prioritise the signing of a new left-back. Instead, the Catalans will focus their attention on bolstering their central midfield department, having already strengthened the attack and the defence so far this summer.

The Blaugrana manager Ronald Koeman believes that having Alba in the ranks is enough, with the club likely to call upon promising teenager Alejandro Balde as cover if needed. The 17-year-old will spend the entire pre-season with the senior squad where his readiness for a role with the first team will be assessed.

The report further adds that Sergino Dest, who is a right-back primarily, would be used on the left side of the defence should the situation demand. Manager Koeman is said to have confidence that the USMNT international can do the job in the new position.

Such a scenario would also open the door for an increased involvement for Sergi Roberto. The 29-year-old has been linked with an exit from Camp Nou. But should Dest be asked to make the switch to left-back, the La Masia graduate could be the designated cover for summer arrival Emerson Royal – one of the reasons why Barcelona are looking to offer him a new contract.
