Samuel Umtiti has long turned into one of the names on the list of expendables for Barcelona. Ever since his knee complications first began flaring up in 2018, when he made the call to play in the World Cup by risking his body enduring long term damage, the defender has never been quite the same.
Widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in world football during that spell, Umtiti has since gone on a sharp decline, largely through no fault of his own. The knee has been a persistent cause of trouble for the Frenchman, leaving Barcelona no choice anymore, but to look to offload him.
There has been a lot of buzz regarding where Umtiti would go, with reports stating interest from various clubs across Ligue One and the Premier League. The only certainty was that he was asked to find a new club, but according to latest reports from L’Esportiu, Barcelona have not received any offers for the Frenchman as of yet.
Umtiti commands a hefty contract with a wage of 12 million euros gross, one that Barcelona themselves can no longer afford to pay, and no club during the time of the pandemic — will be willing to pay. Considering the 27-year old’s consistent injury woes and dip in form, it makes keeping him unfeasible and selling him even trickier.
Moreover, Umtiti seems adamant about continuing at the club and seeing out his current deal even though the club wants to sell him at any cost. Now, with Joan Laporta already carrying out his revamp of the entire club’s structure to revamp the sporting and financial roots, Umtiti’s time will be up soon, as many reports further state that he will be entirely sidelined if he refuses to leave.
