Signing a new left-back has become one of the transfer priorities for FC Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window.

The club remain certain of Jordi Alba’s quality and the ability to deliver at the highest level in the years to come. He has the faith of coach Xavi Hernandez, but at the same time, Barcelona want to sign a new left-back, who can serve as an alternative.

While the new addition will only serve as an understudy to Alba, he will become a vital part of the club’s long-term plans. He will eventually be asked to replace Alba in two or three years, depending on the Spaniard’s longevity.

Barcelona want to sign quality, young alternative, for a start, with considerable experience at the highest level. But according to ARA Esports, the club are facing a few roadblocks in the pursuit of a new left-back.

Although the Catalans have targeted multiple options in the market so far, they are finding difficulties convincing the targets to play second fiddle to Alba.

Jose Gaya, for one, was one of the players to be linked with a move to Camp Nou earlier in the year. But the Valencia captain has no wish to serve as an understudy of Alba and is more than happy prolonging his stay at Valencia.

The report further assists Barcelona have dropped their pursuit of two of their other top targets Nuno Mendes and Alphonso Davies.

Both the player are set to cost a fortune and will not be content with a backup role under Xavi. It has made the job difficult for the club to find an alternative for Alba, as we close in on the start of the summer transfer window.

There is hope in the Barça camp that a deal to sign Javi Galan can be struck, but the Spanish giants are yet to make a move for the Celta Vigo starlet, who is valued at around €18 million.
