Barcelona are in the quest to add players to the left-back position, for they, as it stands, have only Jordi Alba in the role. Owing to the fact he has no replacement, there is a problem of lack for bceoth him and Barça.
Alba does not have competition, and in the case of an injury, Barcelona can only play a right-footed player in his position, such as Sergino Dest, or Oscar Mingueza. The Blaugrana seem to have found a reasonable option in La Liga, one that will cost them €18 million.
According to GOAL, Barcelona’s pursuit of Javi Galan is not easy. The Spaniard has a contract until 2026, and his club will only allow him to leave if his release clause is paid.
Given Galan is 26 years of age, if he is indeed signed, then it will be for the long term. He already knows the ins and outs of La Liga, and should quickly adapt to the game that Barcelona want to play.
Galan has had one of his best seasons in La Liga Santander. In contrast to Alba, he does not stand out for his offensive output. Statistically he pales in comparison to his Spanish counterpart in anything to do with the attack.
Defensively, however, things are different. According to FBRef, Galan makes 18 pressures per game, 3.6 tackles per game, and makes 1.14 tackles against dribblers per game, all of which are significantly better than Alba.
The competition from the Premier League is going to make things difficult for Barcelona, especially when it comes to competing for money.
Due to La Liga’s ¼ rule, which states that Barcelona need to save four Euros for every one spent, Barça would need four times more than the €18 million available, to sign him, and even more to accommodate him into their salary bracket.
The following months will be crucial in determining his future.
