A dominant 4-0 victory for Real Madrid over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu saw Los Blancos seal their 35th La Liga title. The confirmation of their title was always coming, but a series of poor results from Barcelona and Sevilla helped to fast-track it.

As a part of the celebrations after winning the title, the Bernabeu engaged in several chants. One among them was directed straight at Barcelona’s centre-back Gerard Pique.

The words “Pique, bast**d, salute the champions”, were sounded around the stadium for a long time on Saturday night. It was not surprising that the taunts were aimed at just one specific Barcelona and not the team.

Pique does not have a healthy relationship with Madrid – or any of his rivals, in fact – and is often subject to hostile chants at the opposition stadiums.

This particular reminds one of the antics of Isco when Real Madrid won the title in 2017. The Spanish midfielder said the same words five years ago, and the trend seems to have followed.

However, this chant has streamed down from 2006 when, Samuel Eto’o famously began a similar chant aimed at Real Madrid when Barcelona won the league. The Cameroonian striker took rounds of the Camp Nou while shouting:

“Madrid, bast**ds, salute the champions.”

Eto’o did, however, call a press conference soon after to apologise. As a Real Madrid Castilla graduate, he said, “I bit the hand that fed me, and I’m sorry. My apologies.”

Nevertheless, it is not surprising to see the two fanbases have a go at each other, given their historic rivalry.

Real Madrid wrapped up the league title despite a valiant effort from Barcelona to come back in the final stages. The Madrid based side now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City early next week.
