In what could be perceived as a blow for Barcelona in the transfer market, PSG have taken the lead and are in pole position to sign Corinthians midfield prodigy Gabriel Moscardo, reports Joaquim Piera of SPORT.

Moscardo, 18, has emerged as one of the most in-demand young prospects from Brazil after enjoying a breakthrough year in senior football.

A defensive midfielder by trade, the teenage prospect has caught the attention of Barça, who are in the market for a new pivot midfielder for next summer.

Deco an admirer of Moscardo

One of the main reasons behind Barcelona’s interest in Moscardo has been the club’s sporting director, Deco.

Even before he officially assumed the position as director this summer, the former midfielder had set his sights on the 18-year-old Corinthians starlet and had even explored the possibility of securing a deal for him.

And even though Barcelona brought in Oriol Romeu, they are on the market for a new player with Moscardo being an option.

In fact, the aforementioned report mentions that Deco has made several approaches to the player’s entourage to discuss the possibility of a move.

However, things have changed drastically over the past couple of days with PSG racing ahead of Barcelona as well as Chelsea in the race to sign Moscardo.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the Parisian giants were set to open talks for the 18-year-old and it appears that there has been significant movement in recent hours, which has put them in pole position.

A move for Moscardo is expected to cost around €20-25 million, something that Barcelona are not in a position to offer in January.

PSG, for their part, would be prepared to close the deal for the teenage prodigy immediately, which puts them in the driving seat.
