Having parted ways with Sergio Busquets last summer, FC Barcelona brought in Oriol Romeu to fill the void left behind in the pivot midfield position.

But, the Spaniard’s stock has declined after a positive start in Catalonia, with concerns growing within the club over his performances.

As such, plans are already underway to sign a new pivot midfielder in the summer of 2024, with names like Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi once again back on the agenda.

Another name that has been quite heavily linked with Barça as a possible target for the defensive midfield role is Brazilian youngster Gabriel Moscardo.

Moscardo making big strides at Corinthians

Just 18 years of age, Gabriel Moscardo is making rapid strides with Corinthians away in Brazil.

The youngster has already established himself as a regular in the senior team and has made 23 first-team appearances already, giving a good account of himself.

Moscardo’s performances have put him on the radars of several top clubs, including the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, although reports a few weeks back had suggested that Barça were ahead of the competition to secure his signing.

However, Barcelona are now staring at the possibility of missing out on signing Moscardo as Ligue 1 champions PSG have entered the race and are serious about securing the teenage midfielder’s services.

This claim comes from reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Les Parisiens are already set to open talks to get the wheels in motion for the 18-year-old’s transfer.

As per Romano, PSG’s director, Luis Campos, has been tracking the progress of Moscardo for months now, and it appears that the French capital club will soon hold talks about a potential transfer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are also in the mix to sign Moscardo, but Romano insists that the Blues are unlikely to make a bid as of now.

Even then, PSG’s concrete interest and their financial strength would mean that Barça could now be on the backfoot in the race for Moscardo.
