Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Gonçalo Guedes prefers to join Barcelona over Atletico Madrid and Benfica, reports Spanish publication AS.

The outlet claims that the 26-year-old, who has also attracted interest from other parties, told his agent that he wants to move to Catalonia. And even though Barcelona are keen on the Portuguese ace, the operation will be extremely complicated, to say the very least.

To begin with, it must be remembered that Barcelona already have their hands tied in terms of finances.

And even with Memphis Depay’s departure, it is expected that the team will capitalise on the given space by extending a few contracts rather than bringing in someone new like Guedes.

But if they are willing to sign the Wolves star, the Blaugrana will want the same arrangement that was carried out for Adama Traore. The winger signed for Barcelona in January 2022 as a contingency for the rest of the season, with an option to buy.

Traore went on to make 17 appearances across all competition for the team before moving back to Wolves.

As for Guedes, he has a contract with Wolves until 2027, meaning that there is no way Barcelona can make a permanent signing. As a result, they would only want a loan without a mandatory purchase option. This way, the deal can materialize in the salary margins of La Liga.

For the moment, it is a good thing that Guedes wants to move to Barcelona despite the fact that the team he grew up in, Benfica, wants him too. Above everything, he is also willing to sacrifice the chance of playing in the UEFA Champions League, where Benfica are.

As far as Barcelona are concerned, Xavi is delighted with the fact that the player is willing to make a move. Furthermore, what works in their favour is the fact that apart from playing on the wings, the 26-year-old can also operate as a centre-forward, an ability that will be handy until the rest of the season.

It has been reported that Barcelona will have around €3.8 million to invest in a new signing this month following Depay’s sale. Whether Guedes’ arrival would fit within those margins will decide the fate of his transfer to Camp Nou.
