Having grown into one of the key components of Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona setup, Ousmane Dembele appeared set to stay at the club for a prolonged period.

The French winger, who had been on the cusp of an exit in 2022, had enjoyed the faith of the manager and was showcasing his best performances in the Blaugrana colours last season.

With contract talks taking place in the background, everything appeared set for Dembele to continue flourishing at Barça under Xavi.

But, out of the blue, Paris Saint-Germain made a move for the forward during the summer transfer window and Dembele, despite having previously stated that he was not considering leaving, was happy to jump ship.

Now, speaking in an interview with L’Equipe (h/t SPORT), Dembele explained that after having contacts with PSG, his mind was made up and he intended to return to his homeland, a move which he does not regret.

“Indeed, I said I would stay at Barcelona, but after contacts with PSG I was convinced to leave,” he said.

“Kylian did not try to convince me, I came to Paris because I love the club, it is a French club and I love it. I come from Evreux, not far from here. Everyone here talks about Paris Saint-Germain. It was written that one day I would sign for this club.”

When asked if it was easy for him to decide to leave Barcelona, especially after he had enjoyed his best period at the club, the French international replied:

“I have many friends, supporters of the club, who always tried to convince me to come. Was it easy to choose after my best months at Barcelona? I wanted to sign for PSG.”

Dembele left Barcelona for PSG in a deal worth €50.4 million, but has found it difficult to get going at his new club.

Indeed, in 13 games across all competitions, the 26-year-old is yet to score a single goal and has only three assists to his name.

“I don’t judge my performances by the goals I score. You can score a goal and play a bad game and you can not score and still be very good,” Dembele said of his start in Paris.

“I will improve my stats. I sleep very well at night and I always trust myself. Even when it doesn’t work out, I try again.”
