Barcelona second captain Sergi Roberto has signed a new contract with the club, prolonging his stay at Camp Nou for at least one more season, it has been officially confirmed.

The 31-year-old was in the final four months of his contract with the Blaugrana but had made it clear that he wants to continue at the club beyond the current season.

Manager Xavi Hernandez, for his part, also batted for Roberto’s extension as he offers versatility, experience, and tactical flexibility, much like he had done last year as well.

And, as it would happen, Roberto soon reached an agreement in principle with Barcelona over a new contract which would see him renew for one year with similar wages to what he currently earns.

Now, Roberto has put pen to paper to make the contract official and continue his stay with his boyhood club until 2024. The deal is said to contain a release clause worth €400 million.

Although not confirmed officially, the deal is reported to have an option for an additional twelve months that would be automatically triggered if he plays a certain number of games next term.

One of the most experienced members of the squad, Roberto has played 339 times for Barcelona scoring 15 goals and setting up 40 more. He has featured 23 times this term under Xavi and has contributed with three goals and assists apiece.

With Roberto’s contract now seemingly sorted, the focus will likely shift to another long-serving member of the team in Sergio Busquets, whose deal also expires at the end of the season.
