According to The Athletic, Manchester United made an enquiry to sign Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann, who is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, in the summer transfer window earlier this year.

The 31-year-old Frenchman has been a Barcelona player since 2019 when he arrived from Atletico in a deal worth €120 million. However, he endured a torrid two-year spell at Spotify Camp Nou before returning to the Civitas Metropolitano in the summer of last year.

Griezmann joined the Rojiblancos on a loan deal with an obligation for them to make the transfer permanent for €40 million. However, Barça and Atletico are currently warring over the conditions of the agreement needed to activate the permanent purchase option.

Meanwhile, it has now emerged that Manchester United were interested in signing Griezmann in the summer transfer window and lodged enquiries about a possible move.

The Red Devils were desperately scouring the market for a new forward during the summer as there were question marks over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. And, it seems like they explored the possibility of signing Griezmann as well.

Apart from Manchester United, some other Premier League teams also tested the waters over a potential move for the France international.

However, as per the report, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner did not entertain any offers at the time as he had his focus on succeeding at Atletico Madrid.

But, it is now claimed that the Barcelona loanee is getting frustrated over his situation at the Civitas Metropolitano. Atletico Madrid have been using him for thirty minutes or less this season in order to avoid triggering the purchase clause as they do not wish to pay €40 million for him.

With the situation not looking likely to resolve anytime soon, the report adds that a possibility could arise wherein Griezmann could look to leave Atletico Madrid as early as January.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether Manchester United or the other suitors from the Premier League would be willing to make another attempt for the 31-year-old forward if such a scenario materialises.
