Claudio Echeverri has been generating a lot of excitement since breaking into the River Plate senior setup. His performances at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup recently in Indonesia with the Argentine national team only multiplied the number of his suitors.

Barcelona, who have been keeping an eye on the best young talents across the globe, have also shown an interest in the 17-year-old playmaker, who has been tipped as the future gem of Argentine football.

Reports had suggested that the Blaugrana were willing to trigger Echeverri’s release clause, which stands at around €25 million.

But given the club’s Financial Fair Play situation, a deal was always going to be difficult.

Manchester City set to sign Echeverri

And, now it appears that Barcelona are all set to miss out on the signing of Echeverri from River Plate, with Manchester City in the driving seat.

Indeed, as per reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are advancing into the final phase of negotiations with River Plate to secure the signing of the 17-year-old Barcelona target.

As per the reports, contacts are still ongoing between all parties involved with a deal expected to be finalised for a fee worth in excess of €20 million.

Romano further adds that the deal would be structured in a similar way to that of Julian Alvarez, wherein Echeverri would be loaned out to River Plate until the summer.

Echeverri, 17, had previously expressed his desire to play for Barcelona. But considering the Catalans’ financial situation, a move was always going to be unlikely, more so considering that Xavi Hernandez & co. have other priorities.

And, it appears that the Argentine whizkid will now be on his way to Manchester City.
