Claudio Echeverri has emerged as a hot topic in the South American football market lately. The youngster has raised eyebrows with his performances for River Plate.

This has led many top European clubs to keep an eye on the young midfielder, who has recently confirmed he won’t be renewing with River Plate and that a move to Europe could soon be on the horizon.

Needless to say, Barcelona are among the clubs keeping close tabs on Echeverri, as they look to shore up their numbers in the midfield unit.

Barcelona pursuing deal for Echeverri

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered a fresh update on the future of Claudio Echeverri, suggesting that Barcelona are still pursuing a deal for the player.

Deco, in particular, is strongly pursuing Echeverri, whose qualities in midfield could make him an ideal addition to Barcelona’s second line of press.

Deco had earlier played a crucial role in helping the Catalans secure the services of Vitor Roque, who is set to join the club in January.

Now, the sporting director is tasked with the responsibility of convincing Echeverri to join Barcelona. The player, for his part, is a huge fan of Barça, Romano confirms.

Barcelona to face FFP hurdles

That being said, Barcelona are likely to face hurdles in their bid to sign Echeverri, particularly due to Financial Fair Play regulations.

Barça’s problems are already compounded by recent reports that claim the club could be banned from the Champions League due to multiple violations of the FFP rules.

The Blaugrana do indeed have a poor balance sheet, and with UEFA closely keeping an eye, they simply cannot take any risks in the market.

This does not bode well for the club’s pursuit of Echeverri, though it remains to be seen whether or not Deco can cook up a surprise deal with Argentine outfit River Plate.
