At this point in the preseason, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has a fairly clear idea of the players he counts on for the season ahead. One of the players placed in an unclear position on that front is Franck Kessie.

To say that the Spanish manager does not trust the Ivorian midifielder would be an overstatement. However, it is also true that he will find it difficult to see minutes next season.

Kessie has been linked with an exit from Barcelona for a while now, but the player opted to decide his future after the pre-season tour.

His first priority is to stay in Catalonia, but Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur remain strong candidates for his signing.

According to reports from Jordi Batalla, Juve are pushing to know about the midfielder’s decision as soon as possible. The coming days will be crucial in deciding his future.

What are Kessie’s options?

Juventus have been interested in Kessie for a while now, with manager Massimiliano Allegri hoping to make him the central figure.

However, the Serie A giants are opposed to a direct transfer owing to their financial issues and advocate a loan move with a mandatory purchase option of €10 to €15 million.

The player, however, favours a move to the Premier League.

At 26 years of age, he sees his best years ahead of him and wishes to challenge himself in England, and thus sees Spurs’ interest with good eyes.

But Tottenham are yet to come up with an offer as they are waiting on Harry Kane’s potential departure before making a move.

Barcelona, for their part, wish to finalise his exit within the next week and could push him to accept Juventus’ proposal.

Time to decide

Kessie, whose market value stands at €25 million at this moment, played no part in Barcelona’s last two pre-season games, and Xavi confirmed that his exclusion was through physical discomfort.

With Pedri, Gavi, Ilkay Gundogan, Frenkie de Jong and perhaps Fermin Lopez to compete with for a place in midfield, it is safe to say that he will not see the prominence he wishes.

Pre-season is now complete, and it is time for the player to decide on his future. All doors remains open, but Juventus just might have the slight edge.
