Marc-Andre ter Stegen is staring at an uncertain future at Barcelona. The German international is one of the most prominent names that is being linked with an exit from Camp Nou as the club prepare for an overhaul.

With the 29-year-old’s performances dipping of late, Barça are seriously considering parting ways with him to get his massive wages off the bill. And, potential replacements have already been identified, with ex-La Masia trainee Andre Onana on the wishlist.

The Cameroonian international spent several years at Barcelona’s famed academy before moving to AFC Ajax where he has grown into a top goalkeeper. However, with his contract running out at the end of the season, he has confirmed that an extension will not be signed as he prepares for a move.

There have been talks about a transfer to Inter Milan, while Arsenal have also been linked with a move, apart from Barça.

In a recent interview with SPORT, Onana responded to those speculations, saying: “They talk about many other things, they also talk about Arsenal, Barça, obviously. At the moment, there is no agreement with Inter Milan.”

When pressed if he remains in contact with Barcelona and whether a return is on the cards, the Ajax star replied: “FC Barcelona is my first option. Obviously. It is my home and I grew up there. I continue to be in contact with Barça. I have a very very good relationship since I left.”

Onana has had a difficult year after he was hit with a doping ban. The 25-year-old returned to action for Ajax only in November and will soon be seen leading Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

As for a return to Barcelona in the summer, the door has been left wide open by the shot-stopper’s latest comments. Given the fact that he knows the club well, has his best years in front of him and would be available on a free transfer, a move would certainly appeal a great deal for the Catalan giants.
