Barcelona’s crucial victory over Galatasaray in the Europa League Round of 16 was slightly marred with injury concerns for veteran defender Gerard Pique and fullback Sergino Dest.

Reports state Pique may be in contention to play as early as Sunday in El Clasico. However, Dest’s injury is more serious according to reports from Diario AS. The Spanish outlet states that the right-back will be ruled out for a minimum of three weeks after the club confirmed he had sustained damage in his left femoral bicep.

The American was ruled out for the clash against Real Madrid anyway, but now his availability might be in doubt even for the first leg of Barcelona’s Europa League quarterfinal clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.

This could be cause for slight concern, as Dani Alves is not registered to play in the Europa League. Xavi is rumoured to prefer him in the Clasico regardless, and the veteran fullback has already taken up a key role for Barcelona in domestic duty.

In case the three-week recovery period ends up being accurate, Xavi may have to turn to Ronald Araujo or Oscar Mingueza to put in a shift against Frankfurt. Mingueza is familiar with the role, but seems to be slightly out of favour, having started just two games since the turn of 2022.

A video of Gavi carrying Sergino Dest on his back to the team hotel also made rounds on social media after the team’s win on Thursday night. Dest will also miss the USMNT’s World Cup qualifiers against Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica.
