Former Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig is thriving since joining MLS outfit LA Galaxy this past summer. Once regarded as the most exciting prospect to have come through the La Masia ranks, the Spaniard could never translate his immense potential onto the first-team level.
The 23-year-old never really got an extended run in the side under different managers. But when he did get a chance, the midfielder did not always make the most of it.
Having spent most of the last couple of seasons warming the bench, be it under Ronald Koeman or Xavi, Puig finally decided to sever ties with Barça and chose to move to the USA, signing for LA Galaxy.
The Spanish ace has had a major impact in the MLS since joining, so much so that LA Galaxy fans have been comparing him to Manchester United legend David Beckham.
In ten matches so far for his new club, the 23-year-old has scored five goals and set up two more, helping his team qualify for the MLS playoffs.
In a recent press conference (h/t SPORT), Puig opened up on his time at Barcelona, claiming how he never really had complete confidence during his stint at Spotify Camp Nou, due to the lack of continuity in the side, something which he has found with LA Galaxy.
“A player with confidence can always give 100%. In Barcelona, I did not have total confidence. Here I have been lucky to meet Greg [Vanney], who has trusted me, has put me in the games and has given me continuity, that sometimes this is the most difficult thing. I have been able to show how I play and the idea that I have,” he said.
Puig also highlighted the difference in style of play at Barcelona and LA Galaxy, insisting that he now has a lot more running to do and is slowly getting used to the physical demands.
“With Barça, you always have the ball and that means you don’t have to run as much. At the beginning I wasn’t 100%, but now I am. It was difficult for me to be physically fit, but now I am in perfect condition,” Puig added.
The midfielder then claimed that LA Galaxy have the quality in the squad to win the MLS, saying: “Let’s see if we can win the MLS. We have a spectacular team that is responding very well. We’ve come this far and now we just need to finish things well.”
