LA Galaxy fans comparing Riqui Puig to Manchester United legend after bright start

This summer, one of Barcelona’s most gifted prospects in Riqui Puig departed to join LA Galaxy on a free transfer.

While there were several raised eyebrows regarding the 23-year-old’s move to the MLS giants, it is key to emphasise that he has started at his new club like a house on fire. So much so that the silky midfielder is drawing parallels from a club icon and a legend of the game.

As per a report by Mundo Deportivo, LA Galaxy fans are comparing the impact made by former Barça starlet to none other than David Beckham, due to the number of assists he is providing.

In seven matches for LA Galaxy, Puig has already scored and assisted two goals apiece, quickly becoming a key member of the MLS franchise.

While football in the American top-flight has taken major leaps over time, it is rare for a player of Puig’s age and potential to leave Europe and play in the MLS at such a nascent stage of his career.

Despite the Spaniard’s stock plummeting over time at the Spotify Camp Nou, there is no denying that he always had an incredible ceiling.

As things failed to ever hit the heights initially expected under the likes of Quique Setien, Ronald Koeman and Xavi, the La Masia graduate had to bid farewell to his boyhood club for pastures new.

However, one must note that Barcelona have no question marks about the quality possessed by their former youth graduate.

After all, a clause exists in Puig’s current contract, in which a potential exit from LA Galaxy to a new club would lead to the Catalan giants receiving 50% of the transfer fee.

In addition, a repurchase option also exists, if the player fully turns things around and the La Liga heavyweights wish to sign him one day.

While it is unlikely that a return to Barcelona will happen anytime soon, it seems like Puig and his former club ultimately parted ways for the better.
