Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one of the wild card options for Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window, as the club look to find a reliable alternative for Robert Lewandowski.

Currently plying his trade with Chelsea, Aubameyang has endured a disastrous season at Stamford Bridge. He has not been included in Chelsea’s squad for the UEFA Champions League in 2023, and everything suggests he is not included in the club’s plans for next season either, reports Diario SPORT.

The Spanish news publication further claims that Chelsea are not too keen on handing the player the letter of freedom either, despite his apparent disconnect from the club’s plans.

It was widely believed that Aubameyang would be given a letter of freedom by the Premier League giants this summer, as the club are facing immense pressure to lower their salary mass after splashing the cash during the January transfer window.

Chelsea unwilling to release Aubameyang, who has a contract until 2024, could be catastrophic for Barça.

The Catalans have been targeting the former Dortmund forward as a potential alternative in the attacking unit, but they are not in a position to pay Chelsea a premium for his services.

It is an even bigger problem for the Gabonese international himself, as he had fallen out of favour and has been banking on a return to Barça, in an attempt to revive his career.

The situation could change radically in the coming summer, especially with Chelsea also contemplating the future of the returning Romelu Lukaku. But for the time being, the Blues are not willing to hand Aubameyang a letter of freedom.

Barcelona, though, have not put too much thought into the Aubameyang pursuit. They have made the decision to go after their top attacking target Vitor Roque this summer, although the Brazilian could end up costing a fortune.
