Barcelona had an eventful January transfer window earlier this year as they brought in several attacking reinforcements to help Xavi resuscitate a season that was going nowhere.
The Blaugrana ended up signing Ferran Torres, Adama Traore (loan) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, all of whom played their part in helping the team achieve a second-place finish in La Liga.
However, according to a fresh report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could have ended up with a different striker than Aubameyang in the winter window of 2022.
It is no secret that the Catalans first had their sights set on a move for Alvaro Morata, who was on loan at Juventus at the time. But when it became clear that the Spaniard would not be arriving, Barça shifted their attention towards a certain Edinson Cavani claims the report.
The Uruguayan international was at Manchester United at the time and had been struggling for game-time under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. It had resulted in speculations over his future at Old Trafford and a move to Barcelona was close to becoming a reality.
As per the report, Barça negotiated with the striker’s entourage about a potential move to Camp Nou and received a hugely positive response. Xavi & co. saw the veteran forward as a good fit due to his proven track record, goalscoring acumen and the physical presence he would offer.
Hence, talks were also held with Manchester United about a possible move and the Red Devils were open to letting Cavani leave for a nominal fee as he was not a part of Rangnick’s plan and they wished to save his wages.
So, things were believed to be in advanced stages, but soon enough Barcelona got wind of Aubameyang’s availability as he had fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta. And the Catalan giants switched their attention to the Gabonese forward as he fit into their plans better.
Eventually, the Cavani operation was shelved and Aubameyang joined Barcelona. He went on to score 12 goals, finishing as the club’s joint top-scorer along with Memphis Depay. However, the 33-year-old left Camp Nou to join Chelsea this past summer.
Meanwhile, Cavani left Manchester United as a free agent in the summer and signed for Valencia. He will come face-to-face with Barcelona later tonight in La Liga, when the two teams take on each other at the Mestalla.
