With Marcelo Brozovic on the verge of signing for Al Nassr, Barcelona will be missing out on one of their preferred targets to replace Sergio Busquets this summer.

It was not for a lack of trying though as the Blaugrana made a lot of efforts. The Catalans put in major efforts to try and convince the 30-year-old Croatian to snub Saudi Arabia for Spain.

And, briefly, it even appeared that the La Liga champions were succeeding in their efforts as well, with Brozovic stalling on a move to Al Nassr, hoping that Barcelona would come forth with a formal offer for him.

Indeed, the same is confirmed by a fresh report from Italian journalist Giacomo Iacobellis, who claims that Brozovic’s ‘Plan A’ had always been to sign for Barcelona.

However, the lack of time and guarantees from the club made him opt to go ahead with the move to Al Nassr.

Reports had suggested that Barça were told they had close to a week to come up with a formal offer for Brozovic. At the same time, his entourage had also sought written guarantees about his registration should he opt to move to Catalonia.

But given their current financial situation, Xavi & co. were never in a position to be able to meet Al Nassr’s offer for Brozovic, be it on the transfer fee front or on the wages part.

And with no guarantees forthcoming, the midfielder decided to accept the proposal from Saudi Arabia.

Even after that, the door remained slightly open for Barcelona as Al Nassr reneged on their previously agreed €23 million offer and tried to renegotiate the transfer fee with Inter Milan.

But the Catalans had moved on by then and a move for Oriol Romeu was already underway. The 31-year-old looks the likeliest to arrive at the club and fill the void left by Busquets’ departure. And Brozovic will be signing for Al Nassr with an announcement imminent.
