Conflicting reports continue to emerge in the media regarding the future of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The 24-year-old has had a difficult season so far, which has led to question marks over his suitability to Xavi Hernandez’s side. There have been claims that the manager sees him as a key part of the setup, but at the same time, reports have also indicated that Barça are willing to cash in on him.
Now, Fichajes comes up with a report claiming that Barcelona are prepared to sell him in the summer transfer window in order to generate funds to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
The report adds that the Netherlands international is courting strong interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea and Manchester United keen on signing him in the transfer window later this year.
Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Barcelona superstar in the past as well, as they look to add more quality to their misfiring midfield unit. With Paul Pogba also likely to depart when his contract runs out at the end of the season, a player like de Jong would be a welcome addition at Old Trafford.
As for Chelsea, they, too, are long-term admirers of the former Ajax star. Recent reports have even indicated that the Blues have offered a sum of €40 million to secure his signing, but the Blaugrana are holding out for a fee of around €60 million.
Apart from these two clubs, Manchester City and Bayern Munich have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder.
De Jong is currently in his third season with Barça. He has failed to reach the heights expected of him when the club splashed €86 million to sign him from Ajax in 2019. Whether they decide to cash in on the Dutchman or hold on to him beyond the summer remains to be seen.
