Barcelona strongly interested in former Real Madrid defender; Sevilla, Inter also in pursuit
Barcelona are enjoying a brilliant summer transfer window so far and they are still not done with their business in the summer market.
The Blaugrana have made some major headline signings, including Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde, and are on the lookout for more incomings.
The full-back positions are likely to be the main area of focus for the Catalans going forward, with Chelsea duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso being primary targets. While a move for the former is a possibility, Alonso’s transfer has been looking complicated for a while.
Hence, Barcelona are already scouring the market for a Plan B, and they have found one in Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilon, reports Cadena SER.
The former Real Madrid left-back is no longer seen as a part of the plans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has been made available for a transfer this summer by Antonio Conte.
A move to Sevilla, where he spent a season on loan in 2019/20, has been speculated heavily. But Barça have also entered the race for the Spanish international.
Reports had claimed that the Blaugrana had doubts about signing him due to his past association with arch-rivals Real Madrid. However, it seems like the Catalan club are pressing ahead with their pursuit of the 25-year-old left-back.
But, Barcelona will have to face competition for Reguilon’s services from the aforementioned Sevilla, as well as Italian giants Inter Milan, who lost Ivan Perisic to Tottenham this summer.
It goes without saying that Barça need to bring in a new left-back to avoid burning out Jordi Alba, who is the only senior option for the position on the roster.
With the World Cup on the horizon, it becomes even more important that the Catalans have depth in the squad as the chances of injuries will be higher due to the fixture pile-up.
Reguilon, to that end, can be a viable target, although whether he fits Barça’s transfer budget remains the question. Less expensive options like Johan Mojica and Javi Galan have also been linked and it remains to be seen who they end up signing.
