As Barcelona step up their pursuit of a new left-back, Celta Vigo defender Javi Galan is back on the agenda at Camp Nou, reports Diario AS.
The Spanish defender had been linked with a move to Barça quite heavily early in the summer. However, things had gone quiet over the past month or so, with the Catalans turning their attention towards signing Marcos Alonso from Chelsea.
And while the 31-year-old continues to be Barcelona’s preferred option, their struggles to get rid of players and clear up space on the wage bill have seen the club turn their focus back on Galan, who is seen as a low-cost option.
The 27-year-old has a release clause worth €18 million with Celta Vigo, but Barça plan to make an offer of around €9 million which they believe should get the deal done.
Galan is being seen as an attractive option by the Barcelona board as well as the sports management team as he would also command lower wages than what Alonso has agreed with the club.
It would help Barcelona leave some room on the wage bill for the signing of a new right-back as well, although they must first get rid of several players to free up space.
As things stand, the Catalan giants are working on as many as five exits in the form of Samuel Umtiti, Memphis Depay, Martin Braithwaite, Sergino Dest and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
In addition, Barcelona could also discuss salary reductions with the likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Frenkie de Jong, which would help them achieve ‘Financial Fair Play’ and register Kounde, along with any other players that come in.
So, as things stand, despite the long-standing interest in Alonso, Galan is being considered a favourable option at Barcelona as he could arrive on a lower contract than the Chelsea ace. With just over a week left before the window closes, it remains to be seen who they decide to sign.
